Sometimes I just get so upset over simple, trivial things. I'll drop something and it'll roll into the one corner of the room that's hardest to reach. My phone will die 10 seconds before I get it plugged in to the charger. And suddenly all I can see in life is the endless queue of bullshit stopping me from ever getting anything done and I just want to start screaming and hitting things because everything just seems so hateful and intolerable.
When that happens I try to think of the myth of Proplop, the first slime ever created. The gods had the idea to make something new and stayed up all night crafting her body out of mud. In the morning they breathed life into her and she bounced around, playing games and cheering them up and spouting incomprehensible yet delightful insights about everything she saw. As the day went on Proplop started to dry out in the sun, and by sunset she could no longer move. She just managed to say, "Today was the best day! I'm so glad I--" and that was all; Proplop was gone, just a lump of dirt left in her place.
I think to myself, if a tiny little slime who didn't know a thing about the world, who was a disposable prototype, who only lived for one day, could know that she'd been alive for the best day, if that could happen, then maybe I, who am big and know a lot and have been optimized by a million years of evolution — maybe I, because I know this story, can see that the thing frustrating me is just unfolding in accordance with nature. Maybe I made a mistake or maybe it was just time to experience some disappointment that was always waiting in store for me. It's still the best day, and I even get to live for another day and maybe help make it even better.
(You and I know that if there's only one day then it's the best day and, equally, the worst day. Slimes know that it's the best day. That's why the almighty put us here together.)
